Panic attack — These attacks are sudden, without a trigger. It can unexpectedly and abruptly and may last for more than 15 minutes. Based on DSM -5, Panic disorder is defined as “an abrupt surge of intense fear or discomfort". It can occur frequently in a da y or in a few times in a year.

Anxiety attack — These attacks are a result when one perceives a threat, fearful event or situation. There is always a trigger point or external stressor/ Phobia when a person gets anxious thinking about the outcome of a particular situation. Anxiety attacks onset builds gradually, while panic attack is sudden.
Based on DSM-5, anxiety is defined as one of the features of psychiatric disorders: Generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, Social anxiety, Separation anxiety disorder, OCD, Panic disorder, and Agoraphobia(when a person fears going out of home or to go a crowded place).

Panic attacks and anxiety attacks may share similar physical and emotional symptoms. However, both are different. a person may have both attacks at the same time. People who are suffering from anxiety may have a higher risk of Panic attacks, not necessarily true Vice-versa.
There is no way to rule out Anxiety attacks and so the diagnosis of an anxiety attack includes a check of symptoms around the panic disorder, panic attacks, anxiety symptoms, anxiety disorder etc. Physical tests, blood tests, ECG and psychological evaluation are helpful to rule out the condition.
